metafandom is currently linking to meta about meta. Or the lack thereof. I missed that metafandom changed its policies and doesn't link to single-fandom specific meta anymore. That's a pity. I sometimes read very interesting and enlightening meta referring to fandoms I'd never even heard of. So it looks like metafandom will soon be going the way of the dodo, unless one likes to read meta on meta.
Now, what a strange coincidence - I did find a rare case of multi-fandom meta just the other day. The author's statements could give legions of meta and fanfic writers good reasons to be outraged. And write meta.
It's all there: antiquated advice on how you are supposed to write. How your writing reflects on you and why you should care. What you should and shouldn't write. Bonus: the author is male and thinks he needs to instruct a woman in the art of writing. Considering all that, I thought about f-locking this post, but then I thought that I just had to share this gem with all of you:
"Remember, my dear, that your letter is the picture of your brains; and those whose brains are a compound of folly, nonsense and impertinence, are to blame to exhibit them to the contempt of the world, or the pity of their friends. To write a letter with negligence, without proper stops, with crooked lines and great flourishing dashes, is inelegant: it argues either great ignorance of what is proper, or great indifference towards the person to whom it is addressed, and is consequently disrespectful.
It makes no amends to add an apology, for having scrawled a sheet of paper; of bad pens, for you should mend them; or want of time, for nothing is more important to you, or to which your time can be more properly devoted."

| Avatar - wow! |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|01:29 am] |
I saw Avatar this evening, in 3D, and it is truly a visual feast that I can enthusiastically recommend with some caveats . . . Beware! Spoilers follow. ( Read more... )
Btw, I just found this review that I agree with completely, so if I'd just posted the link last night, I could have saved myself some writing time. lol. |

| This post brought to you by the wonders of mobile internet... |

| | exhausted | ] | Well, we did it... we moved! There's loads to do and it's going to be a rush to get it all done by Christmas, but at least we're in! I'm completely exhausated, but I looove the new house and I really hope we'll be happy here.
A lot of stuff has sat in the garage for the past 2.5 years because there was no room in the house... it's amazing what I'm finding and I've barely started going through the boxes!
We still have to go back to the old house to pack up the stuff we just couldn't fit in, but we still have a week before we hand the keys over. |

| Age of Sail: Painting of Naval Battle - does anybody know anything about this? |
[Dec. 17th, 2009|12:52 am] |
Today I bought this painting at a local thrift store. It's not a print, and the previous owner went to some lengths having it framed. However, it looks familiar to me, so I think it's a copy somebody made of some well-known painting. It's very good work, by the way, and I like it a lot, but there are neither a signature nor a date on it.
So, my dear naval experts and Age of Sailers, can you tell me anything about it? Year? Artist? Anything? I'd be very grateful for hints.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help. If you click on the picture below, you'll get a huge picture which will show you more details.
